The Lawn Association is developing the Lawn Transparency Index as a proposed initiative to encourage greater openness, accountability and evidence-based information throughout the lawn care industry.

Following our Great British Lawn Education Audit, we believe there is a need to look more closely at how lawn care products, treatments and recommendations are presented to homeowners and professionals.

Transparency should go beyond what is written on a product label. It should also help people understand the evidence behind a recommendation, the interests involved and the alternatives available.

What will the Index examine?

The proposed Index will explore several important areas:

  • Grass seed and turf: Species composition, suitability, expected performance and ongoing maintenance requirements.
  • Fertilisers and treatments: Ingredients, environmental considerations, product claims and supporting evidence.
  • Lawn care services: Treatment recommendations, recurring maintenance programmes and explanations of alternative approaches.
  • Education and advice: The qualifications, evidence and commercial interests behind the information being provided.
  • Environmental impact: Water requirements, chemical inputs, resource use and opportunities to reduce unnecessary intervention.

Consumers deserve to understand not only what they are being encouraged to buy or do, but why.

Commercial involvement does not automatically make advice incorrect. Equally, popularity, marketing claims or established industry practice should not replace independent evidence.

The purpose of the Lawn Transparency Index will be to encourage better information, informed choices and continuous improvement across the industry.

The Lawn Transparency Index is currently at the planning stage. Its assessment criteria, methodology and arrangements for industry participation have not yet been finalised.

Our intention is to develop a fair, evidence-led approach that welcomes constructive participation from manufacturers, retailers, educators, lawn care businesses and professional organisations.

Transparency is not about finding fault for its own sake. It is about making better lawn care possible through better information.

Further information will be published as the initiative develops.
